F1 STRATEGY GUIDE
What is tyre strategy in Formula 1?
Every driver must use at least two different dry tyre compounds during a race. The timing and compound choice for pit stops โ called tyre strategy โ can decide race outcomes. An undercut (pitting early for fresh rubber) can gain track position, while an overcut (staying out longer) can work if rivals lose time in traffic.
What are Pirelli C1 to C5 compounds?
Pirelli supplies five slick compounds for 2026: C1 (hardest, most durable) through C5 (softest, fastest peak pace but shortest lifespan). Each race weekend Pirelli nominates three consecutive compounds โ Bahrain 2026 uses C1 Hard, C2 Medium and C3 Soft. Softer tyres deliver more grip but degrade faster, especially on high-energy circuits.
How does ERS work under 2026 F1 regulations?
The 2026 rules replace DRS with an active aerodynamics system. The MGU-K output rises to 350 kW and the battery grows to 8.5 MJ of usable energy. Teams can deploy stored energy on any segment of the lap and harvest it back under braking. PITWALL models boost, recharge and neutral modes per track sector.
What is the difference between undercut and overcut?
An undercut means pitting before your rival to emerge on fresh, faster tyres and make up time before they also stop. An overcut means staying on track longer while your rival pits into a slow out-lap, hoping to jump them in the pit stop sequence. Which works better depends on the pace delta between compounds and traffic conditions.
How does a Safety Car affect race strategy?
A Safety Car compresses the field, neutralises lap time differences and gives a cheap pit stop opportunity โ roughly 20 seconds of time loss instead of 25+ in normal racing. Teams that time an opportunistic pit under Safety Car conditions often gain multiple positions. PITWALL models SC gap compression and opportunistic pit logic.
