Azerbaijan Grand Prix

2026-09-26ยท51 laps

George Russell converted a dominant pole position โ€” his fifth of the season and the biggest margin of any qualifying this year โ€” into a hard-fought win at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, holding off a late charge from Max Verstappen to take the flag by just 0.196 seconds. Isack Hadjar, returning after missing three races with a wrist injury, backed up his Red Bull team-mate with a strong third place, giving the team a first double podium since 2024. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli endured a torrid qualifying, crashing into the Turn 1 wall in Q1 and starting 16th, but recovered to fifth to limit the damage to his title lead. The race was twice interrupted by Safety Cars โ€” first for Alexander Albon's solo crash at Turn 5, then for a restart-lap pileup at Turn 1 in which Franco Colapinto collected both Alpine team-mate Pierre Gasly and Lando Norris, ending all three of their races and prompting a furious Norris to call for a race ban for the Argentine. Gabriel Bortoleto's post-race 10-second penalty for overtaking under yellow flags dropped him from 13th to 15th, while a separate investigation into Hadjar's practice-start procedure ended in a warning that left his podium intact. Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll both retired from mechanical issues, the latter with a suspected water pressure problem after just seven laps.

LAP 36On the Safety Car restart, Franco Colapinto locks up massively into Turn 1 and collects both Alpine team-mate Pierre Gasly and Lando Norris โ€” all three retire, triggering a second Safety Car. Norris publicly called for a race ban for Colapinto afterward.
๐Ÿ”งLAP 36Last pit stop of the race: Liam Lawson switches to Soft
LAP 51George Russell holds off a late charge from Max Verstappen to win by just 0.196 seconds โ€” one of the closest finishes of the season โ€” for his third victory of 2026. Isack Hadjar, back from a wrist injury that kept him out for three races, completes a Red Bull front-row-to-podium double in third.
LAP 51Gabriel Bortoleto is handed a 10-second penalty for overtaking under yellow flags, dropping him from 13th on the road to 15th. A stewards' investigation into Hadjar for a practice-start procedural breach ends in a warning, leaving his podium untouched.

Pit Stops & Neutralisations

First stops came between lap 20 and lap 32, with a median of lap 31.

Stops made within 2 laps of a Safety Car or VSC being called. The race data records when a neutralisation started, not when it ended.

Actual vs PITWALL Simulation

PITWALL model output ยท not official data

PITWALL replayed this race 40 times from the real starting grid, with all 16 finishers on the strategies they actually used. It then kept every rival's strategy fixed and tested alternative strategies for the winner, George Russell.

In PITWALL's model, Medium โ†’ Soft would have been 17.6 s quicker than the strategy George Russell actually used.

Model check: with everyone on their real strategy, the simulated finishing positions were on average 5.7 places away from the real result, and George Russell won 0% of the simulated races.

Retired cars are left out of the replay. Safety Car and VSC periods use the simulator's default length, because the race data records only when they were called. Model replay-2, computed 2026-10-23. How the simulator works and its limits โ†’
