Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps is the longest lap on the Formula 1 calendar, carved through the forests and hills of the Belgian Ardennes. The track drops and climbs through natural elevation changes unlike almost anywhere else on the calendar, and is home to Eau RougeβRaidillon β a blind, uphill compression taken flat out at over 300 km/h that remains one of the most demanding corners in motorsport.
The lap mixes two enormous straights β the Kemmel Straight after Eau Rouge and the run to the Bus Stop chicane β with fast, flowing corners like Pouhon and technical braking zones at Les Combes and La Source. This combination rewards a well-balanced car and creates strong slipstream and overtaking opportunities into both major braking zones.
Spa's size means its microclimate can vary enormously from one part of the lap to another β it is common for rain to fall at Les Combes while the pit straight stays completely dry. The Soft is fastest over a single lap but its life is short given the demands of Eau Rouge and the Kemmel Straight braking zone at the end of the lap. It is most valuable for a short, aggressive stint to build track position early or attack in the closing laps.
Because Spa's 7-kilometre lap winds through hills and forest, it is entirely possible for one part of the circuit to be bone dry while another is soaked. Drivers frequently radio in conflicting reports from different sectors of the same lap, and a Safety Car or red flag triggered by a sudden downpour at Pouhon or the Blanchimont section is a recurring feature of the Belgian Grand Prix.
